The Rockhampton Airport is owned and operated by the Rockhampton Regional Council.

In 2007 the Rockhampton Airport was named Australian Major Airport of the Year. This was also the busiest year in the airport's history, with 660,000 domestic and 7,000 international passengers. In the 12 months to August 2009, the airport handled 728,400 domestic and approximately 5,000 international passengers.

Rockhampton Airport is serviced by QantasLink, Virgin Blue, Jetstar and Tiger Airways, with direct services to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

In 2000 the runway was extended to 2,680m to accommodate international wide-bodied operations, predominately for military customers. The airport now has a unique mix of narrow and wide body aircraft including the B747, B777, A330 and AN-124.
