General Aviation Managment (GAM)
General Aviation Maintenance, an Australian owned company has bases in Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Weipa and operates Reefwatch Air tours. Our company is the largest operator of Aero Commander (AC) Shrike 500 aircraft in the world and is the Factory Authorised Service Centre of Aero Commander aircraft in Australia.
Steven Nott, a Licensed Aircraft Mechanical Engineer, formed General Aviation Maintenance in 1983. From 1983 to 1987 the company was only involved in maintenance and as such provided maintenance for Security Express, a division of Mayne Nickless. Steve bought his first aircraft in 1987 and in 1993, Mayne Nickless decided to contract out the air component of its freight network services. GAM Air Services, the flight operations subsidiary of the company took this on and still provides a five-day a week service from all of its five major bases.
Since then, the company has diversified into other areas of flying operations including ad-hoc freight charter for other companies, passenger movements and tourism charter and tour services. With aircraft owned by the company being operated over vast areas of Australia, a hangar was opened in Cairns and this now forms the hub of company operations in Northern Australia, with tourism a major component of operations. The Cairns Base is the second largest in the company with more than twenty staff including flight operations, administration and engineering departments.
